With so many different cars on the market, it can be hard to choose a model that’s just right for you. Most people find this so confusing that they end up buying the same model they currently have, paying no heed to the new and improved options out there. Others take the recommendations of their family and friends and end up buying a car that may not even be suitable for their needs. But, there’s a much better way to shop for cars. Here’s how.
Figure Out Which Type of Car You Need
The first thing you need to do is figure out which car would be ideal for you. If you buy the wrong type of car, you may pay for it dearly. So, if you have a large family and need room for eight passengers in your car, you may want to get a large SUV. If you want a car that will get you from home to work in the most fuel-efficient way possible, get a small hatchback.
Set a Budget
Unless you have enough money to buy whichever car catches your fancy, you’ll need to work out a budget. If you’re paying for it outright, decide the upper limit for the purchase. If you are taking a loan, check how much you can afford to pay every month (ideally, under 15% of your net monthly income).
Look for Cars
Now that you’ve worked out these details, you can begin looking for cars. Don’t limit yourself to a single car dealership. Make sure to check out all your options – car dealerships around where you stay, car lots, and even private sellers (if you don’t mind buying a used car). Carefully assess the features of all the cars you like.
Test Drive Cars
Once you’ve shortlisted a few cars, you can go ahead and take these cars for test drives. Don’t rush this. Drive for at least 20 minutes, if not more, and drive the car in peak traffic, on a highway, and even a hill or road with an incline. Watch out for any odd sounds and check how comfortable you feel behind the wheel. It’s best if you test drive at least 3-4 different cars so you can compare how they drive and handle.
Review Your Options
Now, you can go ahead and review your options and opt for the car that makes the most sense to you in terms of its performance and cost.
